Hi guys,
My first DIY for the “Me-made Summer Challenge” is this Smocked tiered maxi dress. It’s such a beautiful dress and perfect for a summer wondering around.
To make this dress, you can check out my basic information below:
– Sewing machine: Merrit Joyful Sewing
– Material: 3m of loose linen with floral printing
– My body size: 82-64-92 (I usually wear Small size)
– My high: 165cm
This dress can fit your body easily by the shirring at the top. So you don’t need to worry about the measurements. And the shirring is not as difficult as you think. Just follow to my instructions, I promise you can do it and it’ll turn out great.
I create this challenge to spread my love at sewing to everyone and bring the fresh feeling to our summer in this special year. So I hope you love this idea and join me in this challenge.

Drawing and cutting directly on the fabric is giving me anxiety π
Awesome tutorial
Great skills
Thank you π
Amazing
Thanks
Im going to try to refashion a long maxi skirt into this dress with this tutorial, wish me luck. It looks so beautiful and you made it look so easy.
You can do it!
So cute
@Jess Dang welcome
Lovely
Thanks!
Hi Jess! I’m just starting this project! I just wanted to confirm how you got the “width of breast” measurement? Do you measure the entire width of your chest?
@Jess Dang That makes more sense now, thank you!
The way I measured :the width of the the breast” by measure from upper the breast to under the breast
I love the way you explain and show things, it makes it so easy to followβ€οΈ
Thank you so much!
The fabric is stunning!
@Jess Dang Yes that’s true!
Yeah, and the color and detail are so beautiful too π
Hi Jess! I have a question, when cutting the tires, does the fabric need to be folded? Bye
No need to fold the fabric when cutting the tires. Just make sure the width of each tire in the end will be enough
its absolutely beautiful
Thank you so much
Some feedback from me, who has actually made this:
– First of all, Jess, thank you so much. This was my first maxi dress and first time smocking/shirring and Iβm so pleased with the result! I am about 184 cm tall and made it floor length, but 3M of fabric was still enough. I used a lightweight cotton instead of linen bc linen was too expensive, and it still turned out great. The shirring part was indeed not that hard but defo time consuming. It took me two rolls of elastic thread so make sure you have enough. I thought drawing the lines first was too much work haha, so I just used my presser foot to see more or less how much space I should leave between each line and the line before it. Worked totally fine, and the shirring is very forgiving, you wonβt see little mistakes. For the straps: really see where you want them when you try the dress on, I put my back straps way to far to the side bc I didnβt. Pattern overall worked great and the shoulder straps (which I thought were quite long) worked perfect. Make sure to cut all your pattern pieces on the fold like Jenn does. Good luck and thanks again!
Wow, thank you for a very detail feedback. It would help others a lot
O yeah and make sure to try the shirring on a scrap piece first! π
You r looking very gorgeous .
This is so beautiful pattern.
Thank you
Thanks a lot π
I love it, i think this drees it is so beautiful π
Thank you! π
You are a freaking angel. Iβm just starting to get into sewing and your tutorials are absolutely perfect and the clothes so cute π€ thank you!!
Thank you so much!!
Thank you jess! What fabric scissors do you use!
@Jess Dang wow really? They are so sharp i always thought they were really good fabric scissors!
I used a normal scissors
Love your videos!! Thank you for explaining everything so well that even a beginner like me can do your projects π
You are so welcome!
Great tutorial and beautiful dress!
This is beautiful !
But please help me I have a question : I did the shirring but it barely shir. I have tried to change de lenght, the tension of the thread etc… but it doesn’t shir a lot so it is way too big for me even though I have made the measurements by following exactly what you say… I don’t know what to do.
(I hope you understood I am not english and I don’t know all the “technical” words)
I think you didn’t put the elastic thread right to the position. Check again on my video where I show the way I did it. I got the same problem like you when I first started shirring
How are you tall?
I’m 165cm
Hi! This dress is so beautiful! How much fabric did you use?
I used around 3m of fabric
Absolutely beautifulβ€οΈ
Jess thanx a million
Thank you. Brilliantly simple instructions. Lovely dress!
πππ¨π΅π
Jess, your instructions are so simple and easy to understand! You have definitely given me the confidence to make this dress – thank you xx
Hi Jess, greetings from Argentina! I love the dress but i¨m quite confused with the calculation of the width to the top, do i have to find my bust size divide it on two and then multiplie it for 1.5? Thanks
@Jess Dang Thanks! Keep making this videos because they are the very best!
<3
You don’t really need to do it. You just need to make sure the total width of the top must be 1.5 times bigger than your bust size. The main thing is that you could wear it and it fit your body after the shirring
Mana, amo seu trabalho. Te acho incrΓvel
Hey Jess, awesome work as usual! Is it possible to make the top without the elastic thread?do you have any suggestions please? On another way to make top?
Thank you a looot, I’m definitely going to make this one and show you π
Yes, you can make the top without the thread. But you will need to install the zipper and do more measurement for the top if you want it to fit your body. If you don’t mind a bit loose at the top, you just need to do a little measurement for the bust

How lovely you are β€οΈ
π thank you
Such a beautiful dress π. Just can’t decide which top I would like with that lovely bottom, the one you made, or different one. A shirt-like button-up look maybe π€ or a wrapped one? Beautiful fabric, can’t believe it is not cotton but linen, what a catch π€©!
Beautifulπ
Thank you π
I would totally buy this dress!! omg love it so much :’)
Yay, thank you!
also drop the link of the fabric in description…your fabrics are always osm just like your diyβ€
Too bad that I bought the fabrics at the local market in my city. So I can’t share the link
Thank you sooo much….. Ur videos r very interested n useful too..
@Jess Dang love you ma’am
Let me understand well. Let’s say my bust is 47 inches. I do 47×2 or 47×2= 94+23.5?
Thanks. Now I understand. I usually double the about I get. Thanks Γ lot. I will try but I wont share because I dont have Instagram
If your bust is 47 inches -> The width of the top will be 23.5 x 1.5 = 35.25 -> Total will be 70.5 inches for the whole width of the fabric. Because I fold the fabric in half.
Thank you so much for this video and all your DIY videos, your designs are amazing and your instructions so clear, it make it so easy! Can’t wait for your next tutorials! ππ
Thank you for your amazing tutorialβ€
You’re welcome π

Cute
This is lovelyππ
*super nice!*
Jess.. can we use chiffon fabric for this dress? Will it be possible to sheer it properly?
Yes, you can use chiffon fabric. But I think you might need to have a lining inside as chiffon is quite thin and see through
The shirring part scares me but I want to try it again…π
@Jess Dang maybe on a small scale first…π
Yeah, let’s try it. And shirring is not that difficult π
Thank you very much β₯οΈπ₯°β₯οΈπ₯°β₯οΈ
